UFA Co-operative Limited’s acquisition of Wholesale Sports advances the co-operative towards its mission.
Calgary, July 16—UFA Co-operative Limited’s aggressive growth plans lead it to acquire Wholesale Sports of Calgary. “UFA is a co-operative committed to fulfilling our mission of serving the people who live, work and play in rural communities,” says Dallas Thorsteinson, president and chief executive officer. “The Wholesale Sports acquisition advances our strategy, while diversifying UFA’s business. We recognize that our ability to serve our traditional, core agricultural members and customers depends, in part, on diversifying beyond our traditional businesses.” Wholesale Sports is a privately-owned sporting good chain that’s been in business for more than 30 years. Since 2005, they’ve grown their business by about 110 per cent. The management and employees of Wholesale Sports have built a successful business by understanding and serving the market. UFA will operate Wholesale Sports as wholly-owned subsidiary with the same employees and vendors who have contributed to the success of Wholesale Sports. “UFA’s success has come from staying in touch with our members, customers and the rural communities we serve,” says Clarence Olthuis, chairman of UFA’s board of directors. “This acquisition is an investment in the sustainability of our co-operative while maintaining the focus on why we exist.” UFA’s 2007 revenues were more than $1.8 billion, ranking it among the 40 largest Alberta companies in terms of revenue, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers and Alberta Venture magazine.
